Jesus Loves Me

Probably the most famous children’s church song is “Jesus Loves Me”, yet in all my years of singing this song, I never realized the story behind this beloved song.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.

Anna Warner, author of this song, lived with her sister, Susan close to West Point Academy. Their uncle being Chaplain,  Anna and Susan had the opportunity to teach Sunday school classes to some of the cadets. These two sisters enjoyed their opportunities through family, but later, their family was in dire need of more income and the sisters were forced to help. Their solution was to write novels.

Jesus loves me! He who died,
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

Susan was writing a novel that involved the death of a little child. Anna was asked to write “a children’s song of comfort to be sung by [the] dying child in the story.” Anna then composed the lyrics to “Jesus Loves Me.” It was only two short years later that William B. Bradbury, composer of many other famous hymn tunes, wrote the music for this song. The song took flight and still flies today through the lips of children across the world.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so
